Free In-Home Water Testing in Charlotte, Rock Hill and Fort Mill

Every water company in this market offers a free test. It is table stakes, and it is also the single most abused trust point in the category, because the person running the test is usually the person quoting the price, and they are usually on commission.

Ours works differently in two specific, checkable ways.

Nobody here works on commission. There is no version of this where someone earns more by finding a bigger problem in your garage.

You keep the readings. Written down, yours, whether you buy anything or not. That is not a courtesy, it is the point. A test whose results you never see is not a test, it is a sales presentation.

About 45 minutes, at your own kitchen tap

What we actually measure, and what we cannot.

Read while you watch, then explained against your own utility’s published report, with a straight answer on what would change each number and whether it is worth changing.

The five readings

On site, in front of you

  • Total hardness. The number that settles the softener question, and the one most likely to end the conversation early.
  • Chlorine. How much disinfectant residual is actually reaching your house.
  • Total dissolved solids. The general mineral load, and the number that usually explains taste.
  • pH. On a well, the one that quietly destroys copper pipe.
  • Iron. The staining and the metallic taste.

You keep the readings, buy or not

What a home test cannot do

Most companies will not say this part

  • A field test kit cannot reliably detect arsenic, bacteria, radon, PFAS or lead. Those need a laboratory.
  • Anyone who tells you their kitchen-counter kit found PFAS in your water is not being straight with you.
  • South Carolina: SC DES sells a $20 coliform test and a $50 metals and minerals panel covering hardness, iron, lead, manganese, nitrate, pH and more. Free once a year for residents 65 and over or on public assistance. Their lab is not accepting metals samples between 1 June and 1 October 2026.
  • North Carolina: your county environmental health department. Mecklenburg County runs well permitting and sampling.

Sometimes the answer is that you are fine

A normal outcome, not a failed appointment

  • Charlotte’s water is soft at 32 mg/L and its 2025 report recorded zero drinking water violations. Plenty of these tests end with us saying so.
  • If you want the sceptical version: our prices are published, so there is no number to inflate at your kitchen table, and there is no commission to earn by inventing a problem.
  • That is the whole reason the test can be free without being a pitch.

Charlotte Water 2025 Consumer Confidence Report

What you leave with. The five readings, written down. What they mean against your own utility’s published report, by name and year. And if a system is the right answer, a written total that includes the first year’s filter or salt cost, on one page, handed to you, with no follow-up required to see it. If it is not the right answer, you get that in writing too.

Published pricing

Two standard rates. Both on this page.

A house is either on city water or on a well, so there are two prices. They are the same in every house we install in, they are the same on the invoice, and they do not move because you seem interested or because it is a Friday afternoon.

If you are on city water

The city water system

$2,900installed · about $121/mo, 24 months at 0%
  • Whole-house filtration plus softening, at the point water enters the house
  • Treated water at every tap, shower, ice maker and appliance
  • Takes down chlorine and the trihalomethanes disinfection leaves behind
  • Licensed install, tested before we leave, old equipment hauled away
  • Lifetime tank and valve warranty

If you are on a well

The well water system

$4,500installed · about $188/mo, 24 months at 0%
  • Multi-stage treatment for iron, manganese, sulfur, sediment and low pH
  • Built for Piedmont bedrock wells in York, Lancaster, Union and Gaston
  • Softening sized to the well’s hardness reading, where it genuinely earns its keep
  • Same install standard, same warranty
  • Lifetime tank and valve warranty

A premium national dealer quotes $7,500 to $11,000 for a comparable full system in this market. Ours are $2,900 and $4,500, installed, published. We are not going to characterize that gap with an adjective.

Market survey of the Charlotte metro, July 2026, compiled from Angi, HomeAdvisor, HomeGuide and published Culligan, Kinetico, RainSoft and EcoWater dealer quotes

Custom is quoted, and it usually costs less. If your house needs less than the standard system, a drinking-water system but no softening, say, that is quoted on its own and it lands under the standard rate. The standard is a ceiling for a typical house, not a starting point.

Every price we publish, installed: $2,900 city mixed-bed system with RO · $3,500 dual-tank city system with RO · $4,500 well system · $2,300 coconut-carbon or $2,500 catalytic-carbon system with RO, no softening · $700 tankless RO on its own. See the full pricing page for what each rate covers and what it costs to own.

Nobody publishes a lower installed price. Find one, we’ll beat it.

That stands against both rates, the $2,900 and the $4,500.

Published, installed, like-for-like, Charlotte metro. Show us a competitor’s own published installed price for a comparable whole-home system in our service area and we will beat it. It has to be a number they printed, not one somebody said in a kitchen, because a price nobody will print is not a price.

How the free test works

Weekday evenings and Saturday mornings included. It costs nothing and there is no obligation attached to any part of it.

Water testing questions, answered

Is the water test really free?

Yes, with no obligation. You keep the readings whether you buy anything or not, and nobody here works on commission.

How long does the water test take?

About 45 minutes at your kitchen tap.

What does the test cover?

Hardness, chlorine, total dissolved solids, pH and iron, read on site while you watch, then explained against your own utility’s published report.

Can you test for PFAS, arsenic or bacteria?

Not with a field kit. Those require a laboratory. We will tell you which lab test you need and point you at the state programme, which in South Carolina costs $20 for a coliform test and $50 for a metals and minerals panel.

SC Department of Environmental Services, Well Water Quality Testing Services

Will you try to sell me a system?

We will tell you what your readings say and what would change them. Our prices are published, so there is no number to negotiate, and a fair number of these visits end with us saying your water is fine.

Do you test private wells?

Yes, and a well is where the test matters most, because no agency tests one. Neither state regulates private well water quality, so nobody has ever measured yours unless you paid for it.
