Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems in Charlotte

Reverse osmosis is the equipment for what you drink and cook with, and it is the only thing on this site that removes PFAS.

Ours is a tankless seven-stage build, 800 gallons a day, pH balanced, with no storage tank under the sink. It is included in every whole-home package we publish, and $700 installed on its own.

What follows is the careful version of the PFAS story for this metro, because there is a much less careful version circulating and most of it is being told by people selling filters.

PFAS in this metro, by utility

What the reports actually say.

EPA set a limit of 4 parts per trillion for PFOA and PFOS in April 2024, with compliance required by April 2029. EPA has proposed extending that to 2031 and rescinding four of the other PFAS limits. Both proposals are still pending and neither is law.

Charlotte Water, 2025 report

  • PFOA and PFOS were not detected. Those are the two compounds the 4 ppt limit covers.
  • Three unregulated compounds were detected: PFBA 2.1, PFHxA 2.2 and PFPeA 2.5 ppt. None of those three carries a federal limit.
  • The 2023-data report did list PFOA at 1.7 ppt, so this is a current reading rather than a claim about every year.

Rock Hill, Fort Mill, Gastonia

2024 UCMR5 sampling

  • Rock Hill: PFHxA 4.0 ppt and PFPeA 4.6 ppt. No PFOA or PFOS reported.
  • Fort Mill: PFHxA 3.8 ppt and PFPeA 3.9 ppt. No PFOA or PFOS reported.
  • Two Rivers Utilities, Gastonia: all 29 compounds tested below the reporting limit in the 2024 report, PFOA under 0.0038 and PFOS under 0.0039 µg/L. The 2025 report does not repeat the table, so that is a 2024 result.

Indian Land, the one exception

LCWSD

  • Raw Catawba River water has tested for PFOA as high as 4.8 ppt, above EPA’s 4 ppt limit.
  • Treated water leaving the plant tested at 2.6 to 3.1 ppt for PFOA in 2020, and all four 2025 quarterly samples came back below the reporting limit.
  • So the river has more than the limit allows and the plant is taking it out. Reverse osmosis is what takes it out at your own tap regardless of any given quarter’s sample.

LCWSD EPA PFAS MCL statement, 10 April 2024 · LCWSD 2025 report

So the accurate summary is that PFAS in this metro is mostly present, mostly unregulated compounds, and mostly at low levels, with Indian Land’s source water as the one genuine exception. That is a more boring story than you will hear from most people selling water systems, and it is what the reports say. If you want PFAS out of what you drink regardless, reverse osmosis is the technology that does it. Not a softener, and not a standard carbon filter.

Published pricing

Two standard rates. Both on this page.

A house is either on city water or on a well, so there are two prices. They are the same in every house we install in, they are the same on the invoice, and they do not move because you seem interested or because it is a Friday afternoon.

If you are on city water

The city water system

$2,900installed · about $121/mo, 24 months at 0%
  • Whole-house filtration plus softening, at the point water enters the house
  • Treated water at every tap, shower, ice maker and appliance
  • Takes down chlorine and the trihalomethanes disinfection leaves behind
  • Licensed install, tested before we leave, old equipment hauled away
  • Lifetime tank and valve warranty

If you are on a well

The well water system

$4,500installed · about $188/mo, 24 months at 0%
  • Multi-stage treatment for iron, manganese, sulfur, sediment and low pH
  • Built for Piedmont bedrock wells in York, Lancaster, Union and Gaston
  • Softening sized to the well’s hardness reading, where it genuinely earns its keep
  • Same install standard, same warranty
  • Lifetime tank and valve warranty

A premium national dealer quotes $7,500 to $11,000 for a comparable full system in this market. Ours are $2,900 and $4,500, installed, published. We are not going to characterize that gap with an adjective.

Custom is quoted, and it usually costs less. If your house needs less than the standard system, a drinking-water system but no softening, say, that is quoted on its own and it lands under the standard rate. The standard is a ceiling for a typical house, not a starting point.

Every price we publish, installed: $2,900 city mixed-bed system with RO · $3,500 dual-tank city system with RO · $4,500 well system · $2,300 coconut-carbon or $2,500 catalytic-carbon system with RO, no softening · $700 tankless RO on its own. See the full pricing page for what each rate covers and what it costs to own.

Nobody publishes a lower installed price. Find one, we’ll beat it.

That stands against both rates, the $2,900 and the $4,500.

Published, installed, like-for-like, Charlotte metro. Show us a competitor’s own published installed price for a comparable whole-home system in our service area and we will beat it. It has to be a number they printed, not one somebody said in a kitchen, because a price nobody will print is not a price.

How reverse osmosis works, and where it stops

Reverse osmosis pushes water through a membrane fine enough to hold back dissolved contaminants that carbon cannot catch. It treats the drinking tap, not the whole house, which is why it sits alongside whole-home filtration rather than replacing it.

What ours is

  • Seven stages, with pH balancing on the output
  • 800 gallons a day, which is why it does not need a storage tank
  • Tankless, so it gives back the cabinet space a traditional RO tank takes up
  • Included in every whole-home package we publish, or $700 installed on its own. The yearly filter set is $100 if you change it, $150 if we do.

What it removes, and what it takes out that you might not want removed

It removes PFAS, chlorination byproducts, dissolved solids and a long list of other dissolved contaminants at the drinking tap. It also removes dissolved minerals generally, which is why ours balances pH on the output rather than leaving the water flat.

What it does not do

It does not treat the shower, the washing machine or the ice line in the garage fridge. That is whole-home filtration, and on a well it is a bigger job than that. And it does nothing about hardness, which is a softener, which on city water here you very likely do not need.

How the free test works

Total dissolved solids is the reading that usually explains why the water tastes the way it does, and it is one of the five we take.

  1. Book the test

Pick a time, including weekday evenings and Saturday mornings. It takes about 45 minutes and it costs nothing.

  2. We measure

Hardness, chlorine, total dissolved solids, pH and iron, read at your kitchen tap while you watch. You keep the readings.

  3. You get a number

The standard rate if the standard build is what your water needs, or a smaller custom number if it is not. Plus the running cost for the first year. Written down before we leave.

  4. We install

Usually inside the same week. Licensed install, tested on the spot, old equipment hauled away.

Reverse osmosis questions

Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?

Yes. Reverse osmosis is the technology that removes PFAS at the drinking tap. A water softener does not, and a standard carbon filter is not the right equipment for it either.

Tankless or tank?

Ours is tankless, at 800 gallons a day. That is enough flow to serve the tap directly, so there is no pressure tank taking up the cabinet under your sink and no stored water sitting in it.

Does reverse osmosis remove minerals I want?

It removes dissolved minerals along with the dissolved contaminants. Ours balances pH on the output rather than leaving the water flat, which is the usual complaint about RO water.

How often do the filters need changing, and what does that cost?

We give you the first year’s filter cost in writing at the test, before you decide anything, along with the same figure for the whole-home system.

Will it fit under my sink?

Almost always, and more easily than a tank system, because there is no pressure tank. We confirm it at the test rather than at the install.

How much does a reverse osmosis system cost?

Tankless reverse osmosis is included in every whole-home package we publish. On its own it is $700 installed, seven-stage, no storage tank under the sink. The yearly filter set is $100 if you change it and $150 if we do.
